The red leaves of the Japanese maple tree in autumn are called "momiji" in Japanese. Each autumn, many Japanese plan day trips to visit the most-renowned parks and places in an annual ritual known as "momiji-gari" (literally, maple leaf hunting).

The beauty of the leaves in the face of the encroaching winter is a bitter-sweet meditation on the ending of life that comes to us all.

In this work I have combined images of the passing of life represented by the fall of autumn leaves with the flood of the tsunami.

For the duration of 2011, I am donating all net proceeds from the sale of this artwork to the American Red Cross for their work in the Tohoku region of Japan following the earthquake and tsunami of February 2011.
